the sound of a temple from six thousand miles away

a five screen video & sonic installation part of Let’s see what happens… 2013, commissioned by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea curated by Karen MacKinnon

Using fragments of memory, dream, found objects and recorded sound from her visits to Xiamen, Thomas weaves an immersive soundscape and accompanied documented actions that calls upon and calls to the Buddhist nuns she met and spent time with in Xiamen. Evoking the geography and significant spaces that formed her experience in Xiamen, Thomas conjures the two mountains ‘drum mountain’ and ‘bell mountain’ where, from within their foothills, QiMing Temple and Zeng Huanguang’s studio in Xiamen lay. This space will offer an arena for intimate participatory works and performative gestures throughout the duration of the exhibition where the mountains will act as transmitters that call out across the six thousand miles.
